Can we plan for project success?

The constraints in the project triangle are often used as a measure of project success. However, these success criteria promote efficiency before effectiveness, i.e. a focus on the project management over project value creation (the reason why a project is initiated).

A reason to the somewhat narrow view on project success can be the difficulties to measure other criteria, for example stakeholders’ needs and expectations, or impact goals. It is many times easier to follow up time and cost constraints.

In sum, understanding different perspective on project success is a basis to identify valid success criteria for a project, and thereby relevant success factors.
