History, health and the Internet of Things: seven brand new courses announced
Seven brand new free online courses are now live on FutureLearn and ready for you to join, while many previous courses are getting ready to run again. Here’s our quick guide to them all.
The Science of Nutrition
Are we really what we eat? And how do we know what is in our food? This course from The Open University will answer such questions, looking at the biology, chemistry and physics behind nutrition.
Over four weeks, you’ll look at the components of food that are given on food labels and consider how these are processed by the body.

Improving the Health of Women, Children and Adolescents: from Evidence to Action
This six-week course will explore the lifecycle from birth to adulthood, looking at adolescent, reproductive, maternal, newborn and child health.
Each week will focus on a different area, inviting you to discuss the most recent data, and the current policy, programme and research debates with experts from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine.

Antimicrobial Stewardship: Managing Antibiotic Resistance
The World Health Organisation (WHO) has warned that without urgent action, we’re heading for an era in which common infections, which have been treatable with antibiotics for decades, can kill once more.
This six-week course from the University of Dundee is designed to help healthcare professionals understand antibiotic resistance, and how the practice of antimicrobial stewardship can slow down or reduce it.

The European Discovery of China
You can explore Chinese history through the eyes of Western travellers, discoverers and missionaries, with this eight-week course.
It’s the first FutureLearn course from Universitat Pompeu Fabra Barcelona and promises to shed light on fascinating topics – from the Silk Road to the rise of Genghis Khan to the travels of Marco Polo.

Digital Storytelling: Filmmaking for the Web
The University of Birmingham, the BBC Academy and Creative Skillset have combined forces, to create this four-week course.
It will look at filmmaking theory and practice, and how they interact to produce good and even meaningful stories, helping you develop short films for digital platforms.

Superpowers of the Ancient World: the Near East
Travel, diplomacy, trade and warfare all feature in this University of Liverpool course. Over four weeks, you’ll track the ancient Egyptian, Mitannian and Hittite superpowers, and see how they contested the Syria-Palestine lands.
You’ll examine objects from the University’s Garstang Museum of Archaeology, seeing how experts use artefacts to reconstruct the past.
