Tara Ojo joins the United Nations and Microsoft to mark International Day of Women and Girls in Science
Tara Ojo, software engineer at FutureLearn and STEM Ambassador, joins the United Nations and Microsoft at an event to mark the International Day of Women and Girls in Science.
The 11th of February was declared International Day of Women and Girls in Science by resolution A/RES/.70/212 of the United Nations General Assembly with the aim to achieve full and equal access to, and participation in, science for women and girls, and further achieve gender equality and the empowerment of women and girls.
The day was declared because, according to the UN, despite the efforts made by the global community over the last 15 years, women and girls continued to be excluded from participating fully in science. According to a study conducted in 14 countries, the probability for female students of graduating with a Bachelor’s degree, Master’s degree and Doctor’s degree in science-related field are 18%, 8% and 2% respectively, while the percentages of male students are 37%, 18% and 6%.
To mark the International Day of Women and Girls in Science, the United Nations and Microsoft are screening the movie ‘Code Girl’ in Brussels on 7th February.
The movie will be screened to 220 guests, mostly UN members and EU stakeholders that are interested in coding and STEM from NGOs, industry and educators, including the UN Director for Microsoft – an audience keen to advance this theme, education programmes and policies in this area, and to inspire change.
The screening will be followed by a panel discussion. Tara Ojo, Software Engineer at FutureLearn, will be joined by Suzana Filipecki Martins, Project Manager at Ecsite, who runs educational programmes for girls, and a UNESCO Representative, moderated by Caroline Petit from UNRIC.
