Nigel Smith to speak at Westminster Education Forum

FutureLearn’s MD for Courses and Learning, Nigel Smith, will give a presentation at the Westminster Education forum on Wednesday 3rd July 2019, where he will be exploring the forum’s theme: ‘Priorities for improving teacher recruitment and retention.’

Following the recent publication of the Department for Education’s Teacher and Recruitment Retention Strategy report, the forum will focus on issues around its implementation and the latest thinking regarding priorities for supporting effective teacher recruitment and retention in England.

Nigel will share FutureLearn research that saw responses from 1,410 learners who work in teaching and education and have done at least two teaching courses on FutureLearn. Answering the question: ‘what do teachers care about when it comes to continuous professional development (CPD)?’, the top five responses were:

  • Practical content that I can apply with students right away (85%)
  • Provides downloadable materials that I can use continuously (81%)
  • Taught by leading experts in the field (70%)
  • Accredited by a professional body / academic institution (54%)
  • Short duration that fits with my schedule (53%)

Nigel will also be discussing FutureLearn’s extensive portfolio of CPD courses for teachers, which includes The Impact of Technology: How To Lead Classroom Discussions with Raspberry Pi; Transforming Education in Challenging Environments with University College London; and the provision of Online and Distance Education degree with The Open University.
