Our response to the Heartbleed bug
You may have heard in the media about the Heartbleed bug that affects the OpenSSL framework that allows websites to pass data around the internet securely. When you see the padlock in your browser, it’s likely the website you are visiting is using OpenSSL.
Like thousands of other websites, FutureLearn uses OpenSSL and like many other development teams, as soon as we picked up rumours of the problem we moved fast to address any possible issues.
Here’s what we did:
- Updated our servers to make sure we were using a version of OpenSSL with a fix for this bug
- Replaced the SSL certificate on our servers
It’s important that we state here that there is absolutely no evidence that FutureLearn has been compromised and so every step we’ve taken is purely a precaution.
If you’re particularly worried about this, it might be wise to change your password now that we have addressed any potential issues. You can do this on your settings page.
